Summer Writing Camps


To enhance children’s reading and writing skills, PDCE offers four summer camps for students of all ages.

Summer Writing Camp Application 2015

Elementary Science Writing Camp

(Grades K-3)

The Elementary Science Writing Camp invites students in grades K-3 to join DWP Teachers for an exciting writing experience.  For one week, students will explore the amazing discoveries and worlds of nature and celebrate the smells, sounds, and sights of summer as they dip into their creative tool boxes.

    • DATES:  June 15 – 19
    • TIME: 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
    • LOCATION:  The College School (Rm 127), 459 Wyoming Road, Newark, DE
    • FEE: $275 (checks payable to the University of Delaware)

Our Stories Camp

(Grades 4-8)   

Writing has evolved beyond paper and pencil as the nature of text is exploding to include multimodal elements of audio, graphics/images, and video. The DWP invites students in grades 4-8 to join DWP teachers for an exciting writing, revising, editing and publishing experience.  For one week students will use digital tools such as Photostory3 and MovieMaker to share a personal story with others inside their camp community and beyond. The week will culminate with a presentation to parents on Friday afternoon as students take their work public by sharing it with parents and guests.

High School Writing Camp

(Grades 9-12)

The High School Writing Camp will teach strategies for students to use whenever they write, from the beginning of the process, through drafting and editing, to the final finished product. The DWP teachers will introduce activities designed to promote critical thinking, reading and academic writing. Other topics that will be included are: Using resources effectively, developing details, effective strategies for analyzing, summarizing and editing, developing a thesis, and crafting an argument.  Students will have fun learning to spice up their writing with style and voice.

Exploring Social Issues Through Writing


A one week camp with a focus on using writing to explore possible solutions to social problems that concern today’s teens. Campers will engage in action research to learn about problems, work collaboratively with a team to propose a solution to the problem, and create a multimedia proposal to share with their solution. Campers will gain experience in conducting research, writing an argument,creating a multimedia presentation,and working collaboratively. Additionally, they will have the opportunity to critically consider the social problems which concern them the most. All activities prepare students to do the types of research, writing, and critical thinking that will prepare them fo rsuccess iin honors and Advanced Placement courses.
